The most common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is the species, which prefers a human host. Other varieties look for wild animals such as bats and birds. The bugs — reddish brown, flat and about the size of a grain of rice — suck human blood. They resist many pesticides and spread quickly in certain mattress-heavy buildings, such as hotels, dormitories and apartment complexes.

Two shelters have closed temporarily in Charlotte, N.C. , because of bedbugs, a Yahoo chat group dedicates itself to sufferers and countless bedbug blogs provide forums for news, tips and commiseration. State inspectors say that more emphasis may be needed to tackle the creatures.

Federal officials have taken notice of the resurgence. Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency held its first-ever bedbug summit, and now a North Carolina congressman wants to take on the insect.

Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield just introduced legislation that would authorize $50 million that’s already in the Department of Commerce budget to train health inspectors how to recognize signs of the insects.

The Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009 also would require public housing agencies to submit bedbug inspection plans to the federal government. It would add bedbugs to a rodent and cockroach program in the Department of Health and Human Services . It also would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research bedbugs’ impact on public mental health.

Butterfield’s letter to congressional colleagues about the legislation attracted lots of attention: It was topped with a full-color picture of the insect sitting on human skin.

"Unfortunately, in recent years, the United States has seen a resurgence in bedbugs," the letter reads. "That’s right — they’re back in the sack — and biting."

Bedbugs have hit hotels and homes in every state. The creatures are amazing hitchhikers, experts say, and easily travel in suitcases, boxes or packages. They can live for up to a year without food.

Apparently no state has a central reporting system for bedbugs, according to Butterfield’s office, and since the bug carries no known diseases, many health departments don’t consider it a public health threat.

That leaves the critters falling through the cracks among regulators, said Michael Potter , an entomologist at the University of Kentucky and one of the country’s bedbug experts.

"Most health departments say, ‘Hey, we don’t deal with bedbugs,’ " Potter said.

Those who’ve suffered outbreaks say that the anxiety it induces can be debilitating. Potter said many sufferers tossed out furniture and could spend thousands of dollars on repeated treatments from pesticide companies. They call him about anxiety, insomnia, shame and the incessant annoyance of itchy red welts on their skin.

"They’re, like, ready to blow their brains out," Potter said. "It’s emotionally distressing. Anyone that has never had a bedbug problem is not one to judge whether we’re dealing with a medical, emotional public health issue."

In Congress , Butterfield first introduced his bill a year ago after hearing from a constituent who’d brought bedbugs into her home from a hotel trip. The bill died in committee last year, but Butterfield aides say they hope that higher attention will help the measure this year.

The co-sponsors include Reps. Don Young , R- Alaska , Ben Chandler , D- Ky. , Bobby L. Rush , D- Ill. , Betty McCollum , D- Minn. , Corrine Brown , D- Fla. , Steve Cohen , D- Tenn. , Brad Miller , D- N.C. , and Eddie Bernice Johnson , D- Texas .

Butterfield also has received support from the National Pest Management Association , which says that bedbug calls to pest control companies are up 70 percent in the past five years.

Greg Baumann , a Raleigh, N.C. , pest control expert and the vice president of technical services for the National Pest Management Association , said that a decade ago few pest control companies dealt routinely with bedbugs.

"Now it’s everyone today," he said.

Baumann said companies could use pesticides on the bugs but that they also tried such alternatives as extreme heat, freezing and isolating the insects through mattress covers.

Since the EPA restricted the use of several effective pesticides in the 1980s, bedbugs have built resistance to the chemicals that now are on the market, said Potter, the University of Kentucky entomologist. Public education is important, he said, but the industry also needs a good insecticide.

"Whether that bill is going to solve the problem — certainly it’s a start," he said.

You will also need to wash all bedding and any clothes or items which could be infected.

If you do not have access to steam cleaning, some people have successfully used hairdryers on high heat to kill bed bugs on mattresses and others have used an iron. It is important that the high temperatures are applied suddenly so that the bed bugs do not get the opportunity to scatter and survive.

If you feel that heat isn’t enough and want an extra sense of certainty in eradicating bed bugs, you can make up a mixture of tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle and lightly mist your mattress and carpet and any other relevant furnishings. This will not be strong enough on its own, however, combined with heat will significantly enhance your chances of success.

Using pesticides, particularly on mattresses and in bedrooms can pose serious risks to human health. Furthermore, bed bugs can build up an immunity to these chemicals rendering them useless.

Fortunately, bed bugs are very vulnerable to temperature and applying heat to them is a safe and easy way to eradicate them from your home.

Bed bugs come out at night to feed on the blood of the host. So one of the first steps that can be implemented to kill bed bugs is to remove the physical possibility of their traveling from wherever they are hiding to the host at night. This can be done by separating the bed from any adjacent furniture or walls. Legs of the bed can be coated with Vaseline or mineral oil. Coating should be about 2 inches in width. Another method that can be used is placement of sticky tape on bed posts so that individual bed bugs can be captured. This would also make it possible to identify the infestation clearly. Double sided carpet tape can also be used to trap bedbugs.

In fact they are about a quarter of inch in length and can be seen. They are not much observed because they tend to hide out in dark crevices and only come out at night.

After a through examination around the sleeping area they should dislodged by brushing and scraping their hiding places and by immediately vacuuming before they scramble to another hiding place. Trash in the vacuum bag should be sealed and disposed of safely. Any hiding places and crevices found through this method should be caulked and filled up if possible so that they do not offer shelter to bed bugs in the future.

Various insecticides can be used to kill bed bugs. Most such insecticides available commercially can kill lot of other pests like ants and cockroaches as well. Generally insecticides that kill bed bugs come in the forms of aerosols or dusts, and can be sprayed or spread on the bugs and their hiding places. Unlike with some other insects, bed bugs cannot be baited. These insecticides generally remain effective for a long period.

Other methods of killing bed bugs include placing infested furniture and garments in very cold temperature or in the sun for several days. Bed bugs cannot stand cold temperature or heat for long. This method also destroys bed bug eggs. Before reintroducing the furniture so treated to everyday use again, they should be thoroughly inspected.

By regularly carrying out such steps a bed bug infestation may be stopped in an early stage.

There are many treatments for bed bugs, and one of the common ones is using high levels of heat or cold to kill them. This is because there has been proof that bed bugs can’t survive extreme temperatures and will be killed by it. But does this really work? And can you do it yourself?

The problem is that for this removal method to work the bedroom needs to be heated up very quickly to stop the bugs moving, and then be kept at that temperature for an extended period of time to make sure all the bugs are killed. Make Sure That An Actual BedBug Is Identified.

Most often bed bugs are found near where the occupants sleep so that is the place to start your search. Look at the seams and tufts of your mattress for the actual bugs, discarded shells, blood smears from crushed bugs and dark dots that are fecal drops.

Search around the bed frame, behind nearby pictures on the walls, headboards and on and around nearby furniture.

Thoroughly Clean And De-clutter The Area

Once an actual infestation has been identified the area has to be meticulously cleaned. Remove any clutter to limit hiding laces. Bed bugs are extremely small and can hide very easily.

Vacuum The Floor And Furniture

Use a brush to loosen any bugs or eggs from all the carpet, floors, bed frame, nearby furniture, anything on the walls and the mattress and box springs themselves.

If you are concerned about infestation in your mattress or pillows, purchase zip tight covers especially designed to keep new bugs out and seal any current bugs inside where they can’t do any more harm. Make sure that whatever you purchase specifically states that it is for containing bedbugs.

Treat The Area

One you have thoroughly cleaned the infested room, treat the room. If you do this yourself, carefully read all instructions before applying anything, especially if you have pets or children.

In most cases, sprays are pretty infective. More effective is powder that adheres to the bed bug when it crawls over it and is designed to get rid of bedbugs by drying out their shell.

The bug is small, no more than 1/4″ so make sure to treat any vents, plumbing and electrical openings where they might enter your home.

Retreat The Area

Eggs hatch two weeks after they are laid. They are also even more impervious to any pesticide, so you need to re-clean and re-treat the infested area at least once a week for several weeks to make sure that the bed bug infestation is exterminated.

Getting rid of bed bugs is possible. It just requires some work and determination.

Maybe because you woke up in the morning and had small itchy bites. Maybe because you noticed the small blood spots on sheets and mattresses that indicate a bed bug infestation. Or you may have even woken in the middle of the night and seen one of the little pests.

Reported incidences of bed bug infestations are soaring around the world in both developed and undeveloped countries.

Long thought as eradicated the nasty little bugs are becoming a growing nuisance in all types of residences but the most difficult to control in dorms, apartments, condos, hotels and motels.

These are the places where the bug is hardest to exterminate. Small at about 1/4″ they can hide in hard to get to places that aren’t reached by conventional pest control methods.

Worse, if there is a bed bug infestation anywhere in your building they can travel between units on pipes and electrical conduit. So even if you have an exterminator treat your home for them, they can just crawl along to the next residence and come back after your treatment disipates.

So what can you do? The steps are pretty straight forward.

1. Thoroughly clean and de-clutter entire infestation area.

2. Seal and treat all possible entry points to your home

3. Encourage neighbors as much as three floors above and below you to treat along with units next to you.

4. Retreat the areas every week until all signs of infestation are gone.

You can eliminate bed bugs from your home, you just have to be stubborn and follow through, otherwise they will just return to snack on you again.

The problem is not just in New York City. Scanning Google news today, I see there is a report in the Croydon Guardian stating that London sees a 1500 percent increase in bed bugs in certain sections. There are also reports today about Vancouver, Canada and Chicago, Illinois showing an increase in bed bugs. In 2008 there were over twenty two thousand calls to 311 in NYC related to bed bug issues and questions.

If you live in an apartment building, try to speak to neighbors to see if they are also having symptoms. You may not actually see the bugs, but you can have a red rash and may see marks on bed linens. Dr. Gangloff-Kaufmann at Cornell says that in the past DDT was used to eradicate the bed bugs, but now since it has been banned the problem has become out of control. Her opinion is that the banning of DDT and other similar chemicals makes getting rid of bed bugs more challenging.

Be careful about buying used mattresses or furniture. Extermination and steam cleaning are used and if you are renting you may need to be persistent to get your landlord to acknowledge the problem. Covering your existing mattress with a vinyl cover can also be useful.
